Byron Berline has been touted as "one of the most inventive fiddlers ever ...". He recorded his first solo album Pickin' & Fiddlin' in 1964 with the Dillards. He moved to California in 1969 and began a long successful career recording and performing with numerous artists and groups: Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Bill Monroe, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Emmy Lou Harris, Vince Gill, and Earl Scruggs just to name a few. Byron has led or been a member of the following bands: Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, 1967; Dillard & Clark, 1969-70; Dillard Expedition, 1970-71; Country Gazette, 1971-75; Sundance, 1975-85; Berline, Crary & Hickman, 1978-90; L.A.Fiddle Band, 1978-93; California, 1990-95; Byron Berline Band, 1995-present. Byron returned to his home state of Oklahoma in 1995 and opened a Fiddle Shop and Music Hall in Guthrie.
Byron has recorded seven solo albums, but Flat Broke Fiddler is his latest. This CD contains many of his original compositions and a few old favorites: Maiden's Prayer, Say Old Man and Orange Blossom Special. Helping out on this CD are his band members: John Hickman, Jim Fish, Richard Sharp, and Steve Short. Other guests include Earl Scruggs, Dennis Caplinger, Alan Munde, Jens Kruger, Benny Garcia, Beppe Gambetta, Jay Dee Maness, Jim Garling, and bones player deluxe Barry Patton.
