Mike Barrett is definitely not for everyone. My motto is:
"For people who don't believe you should have to watch what you say"
It was recorded at the Littlest Bar, Boston MA. If you're Irish, and in particular if you're in America on a J1 visa (or if you're in America illegally), the Littlest is headquarters.
On this night my voice was shot (happens frequently to people who spend every night screaming their tits off in crowded, noisy, smoky bars.) I decided to leave the recording "as-is" and not redo it. The voice gets even more "colorful" as the night rolls on. It's the way it happens sometimes (and did happen that night.) I left the bad language (of which there's a considerable amount at my shows and in my life,) I left the audience wisecracks and heckles (God love'em my crowd are the BEST at that.) I didn't embellish, correct or do anything at all to change the atmosphere of a normal night at the LB.
At the end of the night when my voice was pretty much gone (and I had about 20 Hennessy's in me) the Barrett "lack of judgment gene" kicked in and convinced me that I should keep singing til I spit my larynx clear to the back row. Interesting experiment. It's included as "The After Hours."
I'm only gonna say this once: What's on this CD is the most requested stuff from my shows. It's a VERY representative set. A lot of my material is borderline (and not so borderline) offensive.
I make fun of everything - ethnicity, religion, sexuality, handicaps- including and especially that which applies to me. If you think there's a group too precious to be included, don't talk to me about it unless you're making a contribution other than telling people how to act. Mine is to recognize, include and embrace the differences. There's a stereotype about EVERYONE. Mentioning them isn't the same as hating them. If the words make you uncomfortable, don't listen.
Conversely, if you enjoy slams to any group because you really hate them DON'T COME TO MY SHOW OR BUY MY STUFF. You're missing the point and your momma didn't raise you right.
