Dr. A. Marcus Nelson is considered one of the most dynamic educators in the United States. A nationally renown high school principal and motivational speaker, Dr. Nelson has astounded audiences and individuals through the power of his life perspective and the energy of his presentations. Although Dr. Nelson is one of the youngest high school principals in the state of Texas, he has three graduate degrees from Abilene Christian and Texas A&M Universities, including two Masters and a Doctoral degree. A highly sought after public speaker and rising star in the music industry, Dr. Nelson inspires his audiences to personal and organizational change, growth, and an appreciation for hard work.
Dr. A. Marcus Nelson has quickly ascended to the top ranks as an educator. He has blazed an impressive trail of academic and professional achievement, which has led him to John B. Connally High School where he currently serves as principal. In his first year as principal, Connally High School sky-rocketed to one of the lowest drop-out rates in the state of Texas. With only three students on the drop out list (68 students the year before) at the end of Dr. Nelson's first year, Dr. Nelson and his staff completed over 150 home-visits to students with truancy issues. Dr. Nelson has a firm understanding of curriculum and instruction as well. In fact, Connally High School became a "recognized" campus by the Texas Education Agency in 2002 after being "acceptable" the year prior to Dr. Nelson's arrival. Over the course of his career, Dr. Nelson has served as an elementary fifth grade teacher, high school math teacher, middle school vice principal, and high school assistant principal. When asked about the idea of his inspirational message and hip-hop style, he simply says, "...I just speak from my heart...the songs are just an outward reflection of my inward passion for inspiring people to live their dreams." Dr. Nelson has been featured in several newspapers and television news shows for his vibrant style of school leadership.
In 2002, Dr. Nelson incorporated his company, Beyond Rhetoric ( www.beyondrhetoric.com ). This company provides motivational and inspirational services to organizations including keynote presentations, professional development, and consulting services to an increasing number of national and international clients. This is done through individual endeavors, as well as through the use of a team of expert consultants, when needed. Since 1994, he has given over 100 speeches. His audiences connect almost instantly with his energy, charm, charismatic delivery and moving messages. Dr. Nelson holds no feelings back when delivering a speech and his audiences experience an incredible array of emotions.
Dr. Nelson has been exemplary in school leadership and public service. He has served on the Board of Directors of Network Ground Zero, Inc., a summer youth camp program. Dr. Nelson is also an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., an organization that leads the country in community service and the dedication needed to uplift their respective chapter communities. In 2002, Dr. Nelson was recognized as the Omega Citizen of the Year for the Austin-area chapter. Dr. Nelson also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Austin.
