ERULE: The Governor of Balance
"We're trying to paint a picture to where you get an overall understanding of what life is about. It's a little bit of everything."
"Cold Currentz"
Humbly isolated within his Leimert Park apartment, the gentle giant Erule (Equality Rule) sits quietly, scrolling his deepest thoughts from mind through pen to paper. The rhymes flow gracefully out of this meditative rhyme visionary, over the highly intricate soul production of partner King Born Allah, that's blaring through the speaker of a futuristic looking box. It's most often in the recluse and to the moods that the track give off that Erule comes up with his compositions, unless, however, you've gotten the brother open on a freestyle, (which he's undoubtedly capable of ripping' with the utmost fluidity and intensity) and there's no telling what might go down. Be assured, the pieces that have made their way onto Erule's LP Cold Currentz (Flatland Region) are uniquely profound, sensitive and provocative. Listen Up.
The governor of balance, that's what the name means...I just drew it up. I took it through the mathematics and alphabet. Equality is balance and rule is to govern, and by keeping myself and all things around at a balance, it allows you to govern yourself and to be complete.
"The album represents my way of life, and different things that I've experienced. It speaks on growing up, family, false friendships, running the streets, death of loved ones and things I go through in my walks of life. It's a self expression as well as being something that I'm giving back," he says. "It's for everyone, and might open people up to things that they never think about, to new understanding, to a new way of life, to the sciences." The core essence of his work he explains is "To teach freedom, justice and equality. And to give people an understanding of who they truly are and what their purpose is in life; being the soul controllers of our existence through supreme intelligence." It's these basic axiomatic principles that are always involved in his musical expression. "The expression-- it's life itself, and that's what I speak about. It's all mathematics and mathematics is life. Every song on Cold Currentz represents something different, you know, everything."
This 21-song epic is full and well rounded with complex rhythmic progressions and great texture and feeling. There's very little, anywhere that's on this level. Look at it simply as the fruit of divine collaboration. Producer King says, one of the focuses with the music is to capture that old authentic sound. Rare grooves along with live instruments played in the style of the old works create that authentic feel. We would look at the back of these old albums and start to gather the instruments that they used to make the music they did. On the album we used Rhodes, Arps, moogs... what ever we could get are hands on. We utilize live instruments, from bass, acoustic piano, live violin, and all with a Hip Hop chord to it. It's a little bit of everything he says, its music that generates a lot of feeling, like as soon as you hear a track you know automatically it creates a certain mood or essence."
Further articulating on the soulful tracks created by King Born, the music gives off a certain vibe which Erule translates emotionally through his words, such as songs like "Nik Luv" and "Crimm":.... I remember everything my mentals like the archives/Hearing sciences he spoke which I thought was wise/And now he's gone and shit from now on just seems wrong/Niggas be going through it but the camp seems strong/The whole thing is grim/ getting caught up on a whim/The line we walk's mad thin/Seems the chances are slim/Just to win/A feeling that I hold deep within/Reality, for real god it's hell we live in/But we gonna elevate and keep it live to no end/In the love and memories of my main man Crimm.
Erule has a rare gift for finding the exact syncopation of the drums in which he inserts himself. He flows like the track, with well structured poetics.
A lot of lyrical inspiration has come from his dad, Erule recalls: " he always used a lot of words that I didn't know in the course of our conversations, and he'd be like 'you know what that word means?' and I'd be like 'Na.' He taught me a lot and made me think about vocabulary and what I was saying. At first it was mostly fun and games, but after our talks I would write a rhyme and go to him after it was complete and have him look over it. I'm close to him to this day and the support is lasting between us.
ERULE received better than modest sales of his re-released first single "Listen Up" (Pallas Records 94'-96'), even though the push from the record company was soft, Erule caught a large buzz in both the mainstream and underground and has performed at many different venues throughout the U.S. abroad.
As it was to be, the relationship with Pallas was short-lived leaving Erule and King to rely on their on resources to insure the release of their music. Now in 2003 Erule and King have managed to produce an extensive catalogue of music culminating in the formation of Flatland Region, the label responsible for the completed package and manufacturing of their projects. It's been a long time coming, nevertheless their diligence has paid off.
Flatland's array of music is progressive and daring with enormous upside potential; it's a must that you check where they're coming from. Just one rotation of this album will have you frozen with amazement as you enter Erule's "Cold Currentz."
