Durval Ferreira, composer, guitarist and producer, is a rare jewel among the many bossa nova icons. He was born in Pilares, in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro and was raised in Vila Isabel , far away from Ipanema and Copacabana. At the age of 69 (he was born in 1935) he has recorded his first solo album. The CD is produced by Guanabara Records, a new record label devoted to jazz and MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). The varied and swinging work of Durval's can be heard throughout the 13 tracks in the CD. Durval was a member of the "Os Gatos" band. He also worked with Tamba Trio, Ed Lincoln and Sergio Mendes.
Durval is in very good company here since many musicians and singers who are part of his artistic and personal life took part in the recording of this CD. "I have waited for an opportunity to record an album together with the top musicians in Brazil" says the artist, proudly. The public is lucky enough to have an opportunity to listen to the exuberant sounds and the talent of the many guest musicians in the tracks arranged and produced by Durval himself.
1) Estamos AÃ (Durval Ferreira, Mauricio Einhorn and Regina Werneck)
This is a classic among Durval's work. It was first released by Leny Andrade in the album Estamos Ai in 1965. A saxophone quintet, formed by Juarez Araújo (tenor),Ricardo Pontes (alto), Jorge Continentino (baritone),Mauro Senise (alto) and Marcelo Martins(tenor), added a fresh new sound to this classic. After the introduction, by pianist Osmar Milito, come the saxophones arranged by Romildo Cardoso. The record has a touch of jazz, enhancing the rare opportunity of having a plethora of talented musicians working together as well as adding a new beat to an internationally acclaimed classic.
2)Nostalgia da Bossa (Durval Ferreira and Regina Werneck)
This mellow song reminds us of a golden age. It was first recorded by Leny Andrade ( there she is once again) in 1994 in the album Coisa Fina. Amanda Bravo, Durval's daughter, is his partner in this lovely duet. Together they take us back to a poignant time when "music was done with love" according to Durval. The lyrics, written by Regina Werneck, reminds us of several classic bossa nova tunes.
3)Tristeza de Nós Dois (Durval Ferreira, Mauricio Einhorn and Bebeto)
This song is another example of Durval's fine work. It was first recorded by singer Pedrinho Rodrigues in 1960 as part of Ed Lincoln's album, Seu Piano e seu Orgão Espetacular .Then Sergio Mendes (Dance Moderno,1961), Tamba Trio(Avanço,1963) and Doryval Caymmi together with Tom Jobim (Caymmi Visita Tom,1964) also recorded this song. In this CD , this ballad is given a new classic touch. Osmar Milito's piano gives shape to the haunting melody supported by Luiz Alves' bass, Durval's guitar , Zé Canuto´s flute, Paulo Midosi's keyboard and Rafael Barata's drums.
4)Chuva (Durval Ferreira and Pedro Geraldo Camargo)
Even Sarah Vaughan recorded this song, with lyrics written by Ray Gilbert. The instrumental version of this song was released in the first record of the Os Gatos Band in 1965. Elizeth Cardoso recorded this song for her record Momento de Amor with lyrics written by Pedro Geraldo Camargo in 1968. In this CD , it is played by the B3 Trio (Leny de Andrade's band ) and a powerful performance by Marcio Montarroyos on the flugelhorn.
5) São Salvador (Durval Ferreira and Aglae)
This song was also part of Os Gatos first record in 1965.It was also recorded by Ed Lincoln in Novo Toque in 1989.Although this track is not as jazzy as the other tracks in this CD , it is probably the track that most evokes Durval's "brazilianess". São Salvador is the name of the square where Durval lives in Rio, not Bahia's capital. Robertinho Silva's percussion adds that extra brazilian touch to the track.
6) E Nada Mais (Durval Ferreira and Lula Freire)
Durval not only sings but also plays piano and guitar in this ballad, first released in the second record of Os Gatos band , Aquele Som dos Gatos, in 1966. The vocal arrangements are inspired by Eumir Deodato's original orchestration. The Quarteto 004 (EduardoAthayde, Luiz Roberto,Luiz Carlos and João Felipe) provide the vocals for this song. This was a walk in the memory lane for Durval since Quarteto 004 also recorded with Os Gatos. Durval plays a couple of classic bossa nova chords of O Barquinho by Ronaldo Boscoli and Roberto Menescal at the end of the song.
7)Nuvens (Clouds) (Durval Ferreira and Mauricio Einhorn)
This song was recorded by Tamba Trio for their album Tempo in 1964. In the same year, this song was released by pianist and composer Tenorio Jr, in the Embalo album. In the following year, Durval recorded this song for the first time with Os Gatos band featuring Raul de Souza on trombone. Durval paid tribute to the original version by inviting Raul to play in this track. Durval bumped into Raul on the street in Rio and dragged him to the recording studio. Whether this was fate or just a pure strike of luck we'll never know.
8) Vivendo de Ilusão (Durval Ferreira and Orlando Henriques)
Leny Andrade makes a very special appearance in this song which was included following a suggestion by the singer. It was released by Pedrinho Rodrigues, singer in Ed Lincoln's band. It was also recorded by Doris Monteiro in 1964. In this CD , Leny once again gives a magnificent performance ,with her trademark scat singing , together with the B3 Trio.
9) Batida Diferente (Durval Ferreira and Mauricio Einhorn)
This song was recorded by many artists, including Tamba Trio (1962) ,Walter Wanderley(1963),Sergio Mendes (1964) and Roberto Menescal (1967). This version is enriched by the contributions of B3 Trio and Claudio Roditi's fantastic trumpet .
10) Alegria de Viver (Luiza Eça and Fernanda Quinderé)
This is the only song not written by Durval in the entire CD. Alegria de Viver is a tribute to Luiz Eça , the pianist of the Tamba Trio from whom Durval learned so much. Antonio Froes , a fan of Eça's , provides the arrangement for this track The tune, a true example of Eça's artfulness, allows Durval to use the full swing of his guitar.
11) Moça Flor (Durval Ferreira and Lula Freire)
The first composition by the duo Durval Ferreira and Lula Freire , was almost simultaneously recorded by Bebeto, Tamba Trio , Marcos Valle, Agostinho dos Santos and Leny de Andrade in 1963. The memories of listening to Bebeto Castilho singing this song motivated Durval to invite him to sing this time in a duet.
12)Verdade em Paz (Durval Ferreira and Pedro Geraldo Camargo)
Raul de Souza is back with his trombone in this track. It is worth noting that Raul also contributed when the group Os Gatos first recorded this song. It was also recorded by Doris Monteiro (1964) , Walter Wanderley (1965) and Tito Madi (1966).
13) I Love You (Durval Ferreira)
With vocals by Denise Pinaud , I Love You, the last track of the CD epitomizes Durval's work. He is always adding a new beat to the bossa nova rhythm , keeping it young ...just like in the 60s.
