Avondale started out with the idea of paying homage to the magic of Failure's "Fantastic Planet" and Quicksand's "Slip" among others. We're not quite sure if that goal was ever achieved, but the mix of styles found within this record definitely appeals to fans of those two excellent bands, as well as fans Radiohead's more guitar-driven "The Bends" and post-modern "OK Computer" periods.
This is a rock record, with singers that can actually sing, and a production that's sonic, big and mean. Fans have told us that we reminded them of Far and Alice In Chains, with a little Shudder To Think and Jeff Buckley thrown in.
We made this record over a weekend in March 1999 with the ever excellent Joel Hamilton (of Glazed Baby/Shiner/JJ Paradise Player's Club and Book of Knots) and Paul Malinowski (of Season To Risk and Shiner) manning the console. This was a labour of love, and we're very proud of what you hear recorded.
Members of Avondale have gone on to new bands in the recent past. If you're interested to know what we've been up to, check out Joe Fortunato's (guitar) band at http://www.myspace.com/venominjames and Gregg Todt's (drums) band at http://www.federationofhorsepower.com/main.html.
