Annette's melancholic sultry voice ebbing and flowing through eerily sweet modern rock grooves sets the ethereal tone for "The Perils of Iva". While moving smoothly from the tremelo guitar-driven loops of "Live It Up Girl" to the acoustic cabaret trio of "Beautiful Impostor" and the swanky, latin kitsch of "Better Day", listeners will be guided by Annette's thoughtful lyrics. When asked about the nature of her songs she says, "I think I'm lyrically drawn to darker themes and I like the music to provide the levity. One of my favorite songs is 'Strange Fruit' performed by Billy Holiday. The imagery in the lyrics doesn't get much darker, while the melody is sweet and almost hypnotic, compelling you to listen."

Once you are drawn into the world of "Iva", the intimate nature of Annette's lyrics reveals a mystical and universal side to her music. The politically-charged "Crying For You" concerns a fictional anti-abortionist who kills a doctor. She has dedicated the song in memoriam to three doctors actually killed by anti-abortion activists.

But Annette is not all work and no play. "We'll Ride" is a fanciful, escapist romp that balances the dark with the light, giving release from her "Perils".

With musicianship and production from her gold and platinum-winning partner, Ashley Shepherd, "The Perils of Iva" is a well-crafted debut for an up and coming singer-songwriter like Annette Shepherd.
