44 DOUBLE D - "Sex is Evil" - PantyRaid Records

Rating: 9 outta 10 stars

So you pick up a CD and scan the titles for a second or two and there's a couple that stand out, ones that make you think "I'll play this first" and sometimes even "Aaawww fuck it, I'll buy it". The opening song on this is rather blandly titled "Ohhh Yeah" which is actually a nifty little title when you slam it thru your stereo and the chorus goes "Thank God she left me for her lesbian lover". You can imagine a little thought bubble in a cartoon strip or as some guy's elatedly relieved response to being told "I'm leaving you no-good rotten stinking drunk piss poor excuse for a man...I'm leaving you for someone that doesn't leave the remains of Brylcreem Ultra all over the sheets...and elsewhere....I'm going to stay with Marjorie from the flower shop" and you go Ohhhh Yeah, all RIGHT (and no this isn't - unfortunately - remotely autobiographical) then a chorus of wibbly wobbly bigsby fried Gretsch geetar twangings come crashing in as the poifect soundtrack to your confusion. Like the musical equivalent of Homer's D'oh! or !!"$%^&*@.on a cartoon. The Double D's, or the 44's, surely one of which they're either known by a'ready or will be soon (I prefer the Double D's for some inexplicable reason) serve up a steaming stew of Reverend Horton Heat metallic rockabilly with more than a liberal lashing of the Cramps leering lasciviousness. A platter overflowing with fizzpop reverby trebletop twangings on a bed of prehistoric tom tom drumming. Y'know how some folks drive with one hand on the wheel and one on the gear stick? well these cats have one hand permanently on the old tremelo arm. Not a bad thing at all in any way shape or form even if they do lack a snifter of the Rvnd's ability, or inclination, to slip into something looser and more countryfried and The Cramps wildly gleeful tongue in cheek abandon...everything's in order I can just imagine what Lux'd do, say, with a track like Spank Me. Apart from to make it even camper. There's also the hidden extra track called something like "Make Sweet Love To My Hair" which is a gloriously darft take off of Be-Bop-A-Lula - "She's the girl in the red g-string, she's the queen of the greaser scene". There's also the first song I've heard about Internet porn too. Sooooo, I'd say this is purty classy. Pile on the tremelo, bring along the big, curvy Gretsches and coat in grease for a delightful little treat.
