A.O.S began back in '95 basically playing what a lot of punk bands that exist today began playing: metal/hardcore! (they weren't initially known as A.O.S, more like Avulsion, Rust, Anatomy of the Spine, and many more metal like names such as these. They finally agreed on the name of "Anotomy of the Spine" which was later condensed to A.O.S) From the beginning of their not so epic struggle, band members came and went with the times. Then about three to four years ago with a loss of one original member, this metal influenced band came into contact with another potential member: Nick Rowe.
His musical talent on the guitar was unheard of around the area for as young as he was. I think he was only like 15 or something like that (his mom wouldn't let him practice past 9 on school nights). After Phil and Gabe beat the shit out of Rowe, he joined the band and modern A.O.S was born.
After the Rowe addition, the music style and all around metal presence began to adapt to somewhat of a gothic influence. Then a drastic change occured. A friend of the band exposed them to what, at first, seemed like a bunch of distorted noise (it was NoFx). That noise was a spring board for A.O.S. It gave them a cause for action and a musical style that appealed to them. Not long after being exposed, A.O.S found themselves amongst the crowds at St. Louis, Chicago, and Springfield punk rock shows.
After being morphed into a punk rock band, the three A.O.S members began recruiting talent to fill in some space after the metal band dissolved. Along with the demise of metal from their style, the band also decided to remove the "Anatomy of the Spine" name and formally became known only as three letters and two periods, or "A.O.S". Then in the summer of '98 they recorded their first full length album entitled "Another #hit" (if you don't understand the meaning of the "#" in the title then check the "Newz" link where we explain) with bassist Matt Buha (who soon left the band also). Around six months into the Rowe, Gabe, and Phil A.O.S trio, the band began to gain a lot of acceptance and began to devote more and more time into playing with shows set up in Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, and Northern Illinois. The stress on the band began to build with time and young Nick Rowe could not devote the time needed to be as busy as they were becoming. Finally, after a few other members came and went the unthinkable happened: Nick went his seperate way as A.O.S was left as another band that fell to a breakup.
Well, the story doesn't end like this. Out of the spoilage of A.O.S sprang another band called "Almost Brave" consisting of A.O.S members Phil and Gabe, along with Bobby Lynn from "Shaped Like 'M'", and Noah Wenger from a rock band called "Blue". The music took an emo style form and actually brought a lot of success to the band. After recording two seperate EP's and preparing to release songs on a Community Projects compilation out of Ohio, the band called it quits and went seperate ways. Only a few short weeks later, talk arrose between members and an A.O.S reunion was agreed upon.
After re-grouping from the year long break up, A.O.S developed a new style much different from the past love sick, heartbroken lyrics. Instead they had found radical politics and an urgent anti-oppressive message was much more appealing for a mature A.O.S. So now after almost two years of screaming about racism, sexism, heterosexism, animal cruelty, and the effects of capitalism on our minds, bodies, and souls, A.O.S released their second album entitled "The Warm Feelings of Seeing a Klansmen Burn!".
