Back Up Jackson is an original ska-fusion band hailing from the great state of New Jersey. Formed officially in 2001, we blend our ska roots with reggae, punk-rock, swing, jazz, and straight-ahead rock influences to create an original sound that's unique and fun.

So aside from a pact with the devil, how exactly did this assemblage of ska misfits find each other? How did Back Up Jackson come to be? It goes back to the summer of 2000... Jay and Dayv had their respective ska bands, both of which went the way of the BeeGees (the BeeGees broke up, right?), leaving the two in a vacuum of musical nothingness, or at least with a lot of free time. They decided to combine their respective... ahem... talents, and recruit a cadre of top-notch musicians to continue the Jersey Ska dream.

The band went through multiple personnel changes before settling on a steady line-up for the production of their debut album in 2005... Jay's brother and former saxophonist Chris Butkowski on lead guitar, original trumpeteer Rob Nelson, the mighty Dave Rattner on trombone, multi-instrumentalist Greg Grispart on tenor saxophone, founder Jay Butkowski on alto saxophone and lead vocals, arranger Dayv Frost on bass guitar, master keyboardist Reggie Dizon, and our featured drummers: Jonathan Tischio of Raceway 4, and Robbie LaFalce of the Miasmics.

The boys have been playing together in that line-up since, and with favorites like "Do It All Over Again," "Candle in the City," and "Jesse & Jaime," our well-crafted original music is enjoyed at many live performances. The band's trademark musical hyperactivity has impressed audiences and fellow musicians alike in countless venues throughout the tri-state area. The rest, as they say, is history.
