On Monday, August 29, 2005, a hurricane named Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. About 450,000 people were affected, the entire population of New Orleans. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and their lack of response were the basis for me to put together Katrina: one.

With questions still unanswered, the most severe natural disaster in this nation’s history left more than 1200 people killed. It displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. More than 1400 families still do not know where their loved ones are. It reminded me of the years of slavery when families were torn apart and sold never to see their relatives again.

While the Federal, State and Local governments were lackadaisical in their response, families suffered. While they are busy with the Congressional, city council, governor and mayoral commissions on rebuilding New Orleans, do we see a commission to rebuild the families that have been torn apart through no fault of their own? Children have been scattered all over the county and to track them down over 48 state without substations in each state can be a very difficult process. The mission are wanted dead or alive – the recovered dead will give closure to their families and those who are found alive, will prayerfully be reunited with their loved ones.
