About "Dr. Debra" Mandel
Author, speaker, columnist, Debra Mandel, Ph.D. is a recognized and respected psychologist with over twenty years experience in the treatment of individuals and couples with relationship struggles, depression, anxiety, stress, childhood mistreatment, eating disorders, addictions and general life concerns. She is the author of Healing the Sensitive Heart: How to Stop Getting Hurt, Build Your Inner Strength, and Find the Love You Deserve (2003) and two CDs Creating Healthy Boundaries in the Workplace and The Abuser Friendly Syndrome. She has another book to be released March 2006, titled Your Boss Is Not Your Mother (Agate Publishing).
Dr. Debra has been featured in the printed media as a columnist and as an expert. In a compassionate voice differing in tone from her competition in the marketplace, her advice in "Dear Dr. Debra," revolves around personal and professional relationship issues. Using a dynamic and playful style, she offers readers choices and then helps them claim responsibility for what they choose. Dr. Debra also writes articles for national magazines, Ability and Proud Neighbor. She has been interviewed and numerous magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Fitness, Time, Working Mother, FIT, TEEN, All About Me and Pregnancy on a range of topics like PMS, love and friendship, procrastination, working moms, and healthy weight loss and relationships.
Dr. Debra has become a familiar face on national television having regularly appeared on the nationally syndicated Larry Elder Show. She has appeared on numerous other shows such as 30 Days, My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance, Rob Nelson and Berman and Berman. She has been on well over 200 radio programs and also hosted her own weekly radio show called Shrink Rap. Dr. Debra is known for uniquely combining sensitivity with a "take charge" approach to live. A member of the American Psychological Association and the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, Dr. Debra graduated summa cum laude from California State University, Northridge in just three years, and then received her masters in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1984. She earned her doctorate degree in clinical psychology in 1987 and was licensed to practice in California in 1989. In addition to advanced training in Gestalt therapy, she has also received specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), a therapy approach particularly beneficial to trauma patients.
Dr. Debra's twenty years of clinical experience has included time at local hospitals where she treated individuals and facilitated groups for adult patients with eating disorders, dissociative identity disorders, and histories of severe abuse. She has also worked extensively with severely emotionally disturbed adolescents in a number of clinic and hospital settings.
Dr. Debra practices out of two offices, Encino and Thousand Oaks, California. In spite of her busy career and a second book in the works, her main passion and focus remains with her beloved family and loving pets.
